Hardwired lamps - A guide
On our page you may have seen the term "hardwired" on some of our wall lamps. You might be thinking what that means and the explanation is quite simple. Hardwired means that the lamp is connected directly to the electricity in the wall, ie that it does not use a lamp socket or an electrical outlet.
Unless you have extensive experience with lighting installation and electricity, these lamps must be installed by an electrician. It typically costs between 150-250 Euros for an electrician to set up a couple of lamps (depends on the hourly wage).
It is also important to know if the wall light comes with a cord or without, which can sometimes be difficult to deduce from the product image or description. If the lamp is marked with "hardwired", it comes without a cord and can only be mounted directly in the wall. Also, the "Cord Length" measurement will say "No cord included", if the lamp is delivered without a cord.
In some lamp-series you have both opportunities and here you need to be extra aware that you get the lamps that you want. Some lamps will be delivered with a cord that can be detached or rerouted by an electrician.
As mentioned, a hardwired lamp is mounted directly in the wall. There are two ways the lamp can be controlled, depending on the model. The lamp can be connected to the circuit that belongs to your wall socket. This is like when you control integrated ceiling spots, using your switches installed in the room.
Also, there are hardwired lamps, which have a switch mounted on the lamp itself. This can be useful if you use the lamp for reading and because you can quickly turn the lamp on and off.
Hardwired lamps can also be cool to hang in the kitchen, so you get an adjustable wall lamp for cooking, without having to run wires and find an electrical outlet.
Lampe Gras
, for example, makes many beautiful and functional lamps, that can be used to your advantage in the kitchen. The lamps are available in many different versions and have in recent years become a hugely popular tool over the kitchen counter.
The Hardwired solution is, perhaps most for those who need to have the perfect look and don't like a cord that is led down the wall from the lamp. The expression naturally becomes more elegant and clean and if you are still in the process of building a house or rebuilding, you can easily setup these lamps, whilst the electrician is present anyway.
