Design: Charles & Ray Eames, 1948
Concept: La Chaise is a seductive lounge chair with an extravagant back and armrest, designed by Charles and Ray Eames for a design competition held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In keeping with the sculptural shape, the chair has a generous seat that transitions into the curved backrest. It creates a feeling of enveloping comfort, while maintaining a modernist aesthetic. The organic shape provides a choice of seating options so that the long chair can be used in many ways and in many environments in the home. The narrow steel tubes that make up the base give a feeling of weightlessness to the seat and support the almost liquid shape. Precisely this form follows the inspiration back to the sculpture "Floating Figure" by Gaston Lachaise, where also the name of the famous design comes from.
