Style Your Home Like A Professional - Valuable Tips From Interior Stylist Camilla Da Costa and Designer Sofie Refer

Part 1 - Tips for decorating with lights

There are several things to be aware of, when decorating with lights. It has a crucial influence on your interior and therefore, it is important to make the right choices. Below, you can check out the best tips for decorating with light, from industry professionals:

Camilla: Use the light to create an atmosphere

Camilla Da Costa focuses on making the light comfortable and cosy, whilst making sure that each lamp has a unique appearance. This is easiest to achieve with a designer lamp, where the light emission has been carefully designed and constructed.

Furthermore, it is important to "fill up the room" with light, meaning that if you have a large room to decorate, it is important to have enough lights for the whole area. You can achieve this by placing floor lamps in the corners of the room and/or making sure that you have a central light source in the middle of the ceiling.

Camilla: Remember coherence

Camilla Da Costa always attempts to create coherence in interior decorations. You can do this by using some of the same lamps in different rooms. For example, you can use a table lamp from your living room and place the same model as a bedside lamp in the bedroom. This creates a calmness and continuity, ensuring coherence in your interior.

Alternatively, you can use similar lamps from the same lighting series, to create the coherence as well. Perhaps using the table lamp in the living room and using a wall sconce from the same series, as your bedroom lights.

Sofie: Keep in mind the room you are decorating. And remember functionality.

Sofie Refer states that it is very important to remember what the room is used for, when you're choosing your lights. If the room has different functions, like in a large kitchen, where you are cooking, eating and serving drinks, its important to have different lights for all situations.

You can achieve this by choosing dimmable lamps. Sofie Refer notes that many people underestimate the qualities of dimmable lights. Dimming the lights can instantly change the atmosphere in a room and you can adjust the light throughout the day, depending on the amount of sunlight, coming through your window. So always remember to have dimmable lamps in large rooms, where changing the atmosphere is key.

Sofie: You can never have enough lamps!

In addition to tip number 3, Sofie says that you shouldn't be afraid of having too many lamps in a room. Lamps can always be turned off and if you have a large number of dimmable lamps, you expand the possibility to change the ambience in the room. This is especially important in Northern countries, where we need artificial lights, throughout the winter.

This approach gives you the opportunity to change the feeling of your living room, to fit your mood and the activity you are engaging in.

Part 2 - The A-House by Nuura

In this section, you can learn more about how the professionals think, when decorating a home for a client.
Sofie and Camilla both work from fixed principles, however the challenge is to adjust the look to the wishes of the client. In the video below, you can learn more about the considerations and the solutions that are chosen, when a stylist is creating a new and exclusive home.

The client that Camilla and Sofie was working with had been traveling the world for 2 years and therefore, he was accustomed to living in a hotel. In fact, he loved the hotel look so much, that he wanted his apartment to be "his own hotel", with an exclusive and modern feel to it.

Camilla: Be aware, when working with large and open rooms

The client moving in to "The A-House" had an apartment with only 2 doors. One for entrance and one for the bathroom. This meant that the apartment was essentially one, large room, which can cause decoration challenges.

"It was extremely important to me to create a certain balance that ensured coherence - and of course - the exclusive look that the client was wishing for - Camilla Da Costa

In this case, Camilla used her technique of using the same lamps, in different rooms. She chose the Nuura Miira 4 pendant for the bedroom, for the hall and in the bathroom. She also applied the Blossi Table Lamp in the bedroom, to complete the coherent look. All of the lamps where black/white, to underline the simplistic and masculine feel.

Sofie: Create contrast in your interior

Sofie Refer praises Camilla for breaking the simplistic design, with a large and impressive piece of design in the dining room.
Here, Camilla chose to hang the Nuura Apiales 18 in a beautiful brass finish. This was to break with the minimalistic interior and to create a colorful and golden contrast in the apartment.
Sofie and Camilla agrees that it is contrasts like these that makes beautiful interior pop and stand out.

Camilla: Apply simple designs, in combination with extravagant pieces

We asked Camilla Da Costa what the key takeaway from this project is:

"Just remember that not all lamps should be wild and lavish. If you have a beautiful dining table pendant, let this be the center of attention and supplement it with simple and timeless designs - and continue the same designs in multiple rooms" - Camilla Da Costa
