A furniture design by Marie Michielssen always starts with a series of sketches on paper. She builds the volumes with mathematical precision. The proportions must be perfect and adapted to fit the human body. For the Valerie armchair, she started from an elliptical base, to which she added two rectangular surfaces, a seat and backrest at a perfect angle that allows for comfortable sitting. She chose lacquered steel so that Valerie can be used both outside and inside. She also likes steel because it is an honest, somewhat brutal material.
