“A redesigned icon that remains iconic”

The Arco K takes shape with a new unique base. The original marble block has been replaced with an innovative transparent lead-free crystal block, which brings the traditional base and elements of the lamp's light-from-above into perspective in an entirely new way. The glass block also allows all the components to be seen, creating an item that is both modern and exquisite.

All other original elements are still present, including the extendable shaft made of satin-finished stainless steel and the height-adjustable reflector made of cast aluminum that has been polished and zapon-lacquered.
The dome comprises a solid section and a perforated part, resulting in distinctive ceiling decoration. The Arco K uses an LED light bulb.

“Creating one of a kind”

The biggest production obstacle was working the crystal glass. To achieve the unique-looking crystal, usually used for optical prisms in laboratories, special machinery needed to be constructed that could process the crystal in one piece.

Flos took several precautions to protect the new glass base from scratches. They fitted a coiled spring around the mounting pin to prevent accidental scratches. In addition, a custom rolling pin with a scratch-resistant coating is included for increased convenience when moving the lamp. A black mat is installed to protect the crystal from below, which blends in due to its reflective properties.

Art works such as the Arco K are delivered in wooden crates.

"Behind the design"

Among Italy's most influential designers and architects are the Castiglioni brothers, who have made some of the most unique and internationally recognized pieces.

As for Arco, a classic, this floor lamp has been copied numerous times over the years, and there are various accounts of how it was created. Flos welcomed the experiment from the beginning, and the result is a timeless design icon. The original Arco's heavy marble base is merely a balancer for the sizeable arched metal stem, influenced by street light design. The brothers put a hole in the center of gravity of the base to make lifting it easier by pushing an object through it, such as a broom handle.
Arco was designed as a simplistic but stunning solution to a need. A need for a suspension lamp that could shine a light on tables without the need to drill holes in ceilings.

The Castiglioni's have, among countless other things, designed the popular Snoopy table lamp, Gatto Piccolo table lamp, and the Toio floor lamp.
